While I'm an ardent supporter of open formats (using OpenOffice at home), and while I also think it would be a Great Idea for Sibelius to offer native MusicXML import, I have to differ with the vehemence of the demands to include it "yesterday".įirst off, the MusicXML format isn't a "standard" in the sense that OpenOffice has become - it has no imprimatur from OASIS, ISO, or any other standards body. We might live without the new 'fanby beam' or 'magnetic slur layout' or 'smooth playback' or whatever, but we all need to be sure we'll have the possibility to access our files, to backup them in an open & standard format and exchange them with others. So you folks at Sibelius may continue to play it down and tell us "it's a minor feature we'll add MusicXML export some day, maybe" but you must be aware that you're playing against your customers by doing this.Ĭompatibility and open-ness of file formats is no secondary issue. The lack of MusicXML export in Sibelius does not only impair compatibility (almost all of us must exchange files with friends, musicians, editors, etc who are Finale users) but it also implies that I'm not able to back-up my files in a format that I'll be able to read and edit with other software, should I want some day to change or should Sibelius cease to be supported for any reason.
